This is the first year for the Great Viking Challenge. The purpose of the event is two-fold. First of all, during Quest time, students from the Oxford Hills MIddle School’s Art of Well-Being Quest are learning ways to incorporate healthy choices into their lives, including goal setting and movement activities. Inspired by this premise, the students are planning, organizing, managing, and running this adventure-based race with a bigger purpose in mind.
Giving back to the community is another major focus of their quest. Ashleigh Merchant, a 17 year-old Mt. Valley High School student, is currently awaiting a lung transplant due to cystic fibrosis. The students want to help Ashleigh achieve this goal by donating the proceeds of the Great Viking Challenge to Air for Ash, a community fundraising initiative established to help defer the cost of the transplant. So, it is the students’ hope to bring people together from the surrounding communities for a fun time for a great cause.
